REVIEW Those wishing to sample a variety of more modern Tejano music from the vaults of Arhoolie should try this Ace Records collection featuring artists like Flaco Jimenez, Lydia Mendoza, Los Pinguinos Del Norte, Freddy Fender, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., Conjunto Alamo, Don Santiago Jimenez, Fred Zimmerle's Trio San Antonh, Isidro Lopez and several others. It's wonderful music - I've loed this sound since the first time I heard Flaco's accordion on a Peter Rowan or Ry Cooder record, or even since Marty Robbins did El Paso with this basic influence. You may find yourself wanting to purchase whole collections from each of these artists.(MB Blue Suede News) |

NO, not a special edition Ford, but a varied collection of 22 backtracks from Arhoolie's extensive catalogue of Tejano and Norteño music with a few surprises, like a brass-crazed cumbia, a bolero, an Hispanic balada from Freddy Fender and a brash, brassy polka from Beto Villa punctuating the more usual rancheros, corridos and canciones. All the genre's favourites are represented - Lydia Mendoza and Don Santiago Jimenez from early recordings; Steve Jordan and the two Jimenez Juniors from the present - along with conjuntos old and not-so-old, wrapped into a 65 minute, partly mono package. Despite the inclusion of a brief history of Tex Mex recording and the variety, this is, perhaps, more of a collector's item than a first-time buyer's sampler.
