REVIEW

“This is the ninth in the Arhoolie Sacred Steel series, and, like several other live albums in the series have already demonstrated, a live recording works mighty fine for this kind of music. The big Sacred Steel names were all at the March 2001 Sanford, Florida, convention: The Campbell Brothers, Robert Randolph, Calvin Cooke, Elton Noble, and more, as well as newcomers such as 20-year-old Lamar Nelson and the 16-year-old Rayfield "Ray Ray" Holloman. The convention allowed for some interesting innovations. Chuck Campbell plays "Amazing Grace" with Dan Tyack, who is more know for his work in country music, while Lisa Lang proves that women can rock out on steel as well as any man. Reggie "Footie" Covington, who is not from the same Florida sect as the others, plays a 10-minute "Footie's Medley" that draws on gospel from both tradtional and James Cleveland sources before briefly inserting Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" into the Medley. The session documents an amazing musical weekend.”
