With Banda, Mariachi, Conjuntos Norteños y Jarochos
Straight from the heart of the East Bay, this young group of singers, musicians and dancers are the most exciting and refreshing sound to come along in both traditional and contemporary Mexican music. Cenzontle is the Nahuatl word for mockingbird, and like the mockingbird, Los Cenzontles sing, play and dance the music of many regions of Mexico. The members of Los Cenzontles range in ages 12 to 19 and study their craft at Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. Los Cenzontles have recorded several cassettes and were recently featured on "Papa's Dream," a bi-lingual children's CD by Los Lobos and Lalo Guerrero.
Los Cenzontles are: Angel Abundez, Hugo Arroyo, Ruth Arroyo, Hector Barocio, Eva Brunner-Velásquez, Carla Diaz, Juan Diaz, Angelita Gómez, Benito Gómez, Germaine Gómez, Kristal Gray, Amalia Marines, Benito Marines, Nancy Morales, Lucina Rodríguez, and Daena Villagrana. REVIEW Talk about getting around! The all-studentfolk ensemble from Richmond's Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center glowed with Los Lobos and Lalo Guerrero on Papa's Dream last year, and now on their debut CD they cover the wide spectrum of regional Mexican music they study at the center. The rich voices of Ruth Arroyo, Amalia Marines, Lucina Rodriguez, and Kristal Gray grab you on "El Corrido Del Maiz Caro," and the talent keeps coming on "Perita En Dulce" with guest Santiago Jimenez Jr. on squeezebox. "Un Poquito De Pecado" is a relic bolero from the '50s done here with the stylistic tinges of the pioneer Mendoza sisters from Texas. But probably the most impressive piece is "EI Corrido De Cecilia Rios," a folk ballad written by the students for a friend who was killed a few years ago. A sad lament, it's a credit to directors Eugene Rodriguez and Alicia Marines, whose aim is to teach these youth, whose ages range between twelve and nineteen, that folk music is a living art they can apply to their lives.(Jesse Chuy Varela East Bay Express) |
