Mexico's #1 conjunto specializing in the incredible harp and fiddle music of Michoacán. Just listen to the opening cut and you can easily understand why they deserve to be named the soul of Apatzingan: the powerful rhythmic folk harp drives the group like a full rhythm section and the superb, soulful close harmony of the two voices outshine any similar vocals in American country music all backed by lovely fiddle work. After over a dozen albums for major Mexican labels, Arhoolie has just licensed these 22 selections by Conjunto Alma de Apatzingan, from Alborada Records in Uruapan, Michoacán .The program is a varied one, including old folk songs, popular rancheras, corridos, sones, religious minuetes, and even danzas.
The conjunto has played for numerous functions throughout Mexico, although their daily work is serenading in their home turf of Apatzingan and Nueva Italia in the Mexican state of Michoacán. They were invited to appear at the prestigous the First International Mariachi Festival to be held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, September 10th-15th, 1994.

REVIEW These are danzas, minuetes, corridos, canciones, sones and rancheras. Some tunes also feature accordion. The vocal duets, and the music in general, are wonderful. If you can't get enough, or they're playing that much less interesting Mexican pop music in your favorite restaurant, bring this home and cook up some enchiladas or something. Like cajun music and gumbo, the music and the food are part of the same experience. Excellent set! The lyrics are included by the way, and translated.(Blue Suede News) |
