REVIEW Many of the early tracks appeared on the old Jazz at Kitty Halls LP on Arhoolie . . . from the period when Preservation Hall was in its infancy. The most vital performances here are a couple from Mike Slatters recording of trumpeteer Kid Thomas band packed with the combination of power and relaxation that made this one of New Orleans most exciting groups. Thomas . . . was in the best form of his career in 1959. Their rhythm section got much of its buoyant lift from the banjo of George Guesnon who is the star of this album appearing also with Punch Miller George Lewis and Captain John Handy. These sessions plus cornetist Kid Howards Armstrong-tinged Nellie Gray epitomize all that was best about the New Orleans revival.(Alyn Shipton Jazz FM) |
