REVIEW Conjunto Bernal's recordings, made in the '50s, would easily pass muster as a '90s outfit, and a superb one at that. Paulino Bernal was an imaginative and accurate accordionist, and his playing clearly foreshadows the styles of today's stars. You can hear the fat jazzy chords later adopted by Steve Jordan, the extemporized introductions to verses are pure Flaco Jiménez at times, there are sophisticated chops and changes of rhythm, and he sometimes keeps an accordion line skipping alongside the vocal in the manner of later Tony De La Rosa, notably on the sparkling ranchera `Si Acaso Vuelves.' Ahead of his time, our Paulino. Add to that some momentous harmonies with brother Eloy Bernal and Ruben Pérez. `Al Fin Mujer' is absolutely stunning - and it's no wonder some say this lot were the best conjunto of all time. Bloody brilliant!(Brian Peters Folk Roots) |
