REVIEWS Steve Jordan is Flaco's equal as an accordeon virtuoso and innovator, though his determination to do his own thing on his own patch has limited his international profile. Arhoolie have served up an interesting confection by tagging on to the `Johnny El Pachucho' album some mostly unreleased material recorded in 1963, when a twenty-year old Jordan was already an instrumental whizz. The older tracks are notable for searing harmony singing between Jordan and Virginia Martinez, and you can hear much of Steve's fast and frighteningly precise accordeon style already in place. The material and treatment, though, is markedly traditional in comparison with the later stuff, on which liberties are taken with repertoire (two C&W tracks), infusions of jazz and rock, and Jordan's battery of accordeon effects pedals. Multi-talented Jordan has been a conjunto musician for 40 of his 47 years. Starting with a 78 rpm made as a prize for winning a conjunto contest in the late-1950s, Jordan has been featured on nine labels. A master of the stylized Musica Norteña, Jordan was honored with a Grammy nomination, has done a movie soundtrack, and was named to the Conjunto Hall of Fame.
This hour-long CD retraces the tracks Jordan has laid down over the years - from traditional rancheras and polkas to contemporary treatments which include the ground breaking use of synthesizers and phase-shifters with his accordion. Sporting an eye patch and a wild mane, Jordan is known for his great, rollicking concerts. This retrospective could lead listeners on a search for other records. (Jeff Shelley Victory Review) |
