REVIEW

“Recorded in Peru between 1964 and 1983 for John Cohen's documentary films, this music is not pretty, haunting or anything else that world music records try to be to sell in huge numbers. It is harsh, gritty music made by Andean inhabitants most of them miners forced to move from their mountain homes to the flatland cities to survive, playing music in the streets. The most chilling songs come from a trio of young girls who sing about the miners' lives. Harps, fiddles, guitars, mandolins and accordions provide the music on most of the 17 songs, and some of the subjects are lighter and happier. Mainly, this is the most unusual sounding and unique recording to come our way in a long time.”

(Larry Kelp — The Oakland Tribune)
