Arhoolie Records will host two weekends of down home concerts starting Friday, October 13 (superstition set aside!) through Saturday, October 21, at Ashkenaz and the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley.
Performers include Cajun music's royal team, SAVOY-DOUCET, (with a special intro. by DOUCET-DOUCET on one night only!), the soul-stirring Sacred Steelers THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS & KATIE JACKSON, Tejano blizzard accordionist SANTIAGO JIMENEZ JR. & HIS CONJUNTO, and legendary jazz saxophonist SONNY SIMMONS with special guests. Local flavor will be added by the CALIFORNIA CAJUN ORCHESTRA, LOS CENZONTLES, and others.
In addition to the celebratory shows there will be music workshops (tba) and a one-time viewing of two great and rare music documentaries at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. The premiere of Sacred Steel the very first document made depicting this fervent offering of gospel, and A Well Spent Life, the absorbing story of Texas songster Mance Lipscomb, will be shown on Wednesday, October 18.
Stay tuned for details, including ticket prices and showtimes.
