REVIEW

"A couple things struck me while typing out the tracklisting: one, just how few of these artists are still with us, and two, just how many turned out some of their best...performances for Chris Strachwitz's Arhoolie label, the source of all the material here.  It's a cliche to speak of how Lightnin' and Clifton recorded some stupendous performances for him, but in my opinion so did Johnny Young and Littlejohn, Juke Boy Bonner, Big Mama, Charlie Musselwhite, and especially Earl Hooker. I have long rated the version of 'Anna Lee' included here as perhaps his best track bar none. Sonny Boy (that's Rice Miller)'s tracks on this set, which are from a collection of singles, have similar status, and rightly so. Forgive Big Mama's 'Swing It On Home' and note that Chenier's offering is swamp-blues, thus leaving the zydeco quota to John Delafose; then go out and get this, real Chicago blues, authentic Louisiana blues, genuine Texas blues, honest-to-goodness Mississippi blues CD."
